It’s just a fact that most guys don’t go out on Saturday night looking for a wife. Although girls are the first things on their minds, commitment is the last. Beware, guys, girls don’t always think the same, though.

Nothing is true for everyone, but in general we’re all alike. Guys generally don’t think about committing to a relationship until they’re head over heels in love. Before that, all they’ve got on their minds is sex, pure and simple. Ask a thousand single guys to raise their hands if they have ever given a single thought to solitaire engagement rings and not one will raise his hand.

On the other hand, ask a thousand girls if they have ever thought about princess cut engagement rings and probably every hand in the place will go up. Women think about commitment. Men don’t.

The fact that men commit to lifelong relationships with women is a miracle of nature. How does a simple 1 night stand turn into an obsessive love affair? In the blink of an eye, a carefree guy can only think about one woman. He’ll sacrifice everything to be with her. He is completely out of his mind, but life wouldn’t work for us if it didn’t work that way.

The whole mating process really boils down to deeply rooted biological imperatives. We have outsmarted nature somewhat with birth control, so now women have more sexual freedom than they used to have. In the past, if a woman wasn’t very careful about choosing her mate, she would find herself pregnant and alone. Therefore, a commitment from a man was a higher priority than sexual desire. While birth control has eased the pressure, women still instinctively are looking for the security of commitment.

Men have never had that much pressure put on them, though. Since they weren’t the ones carrying the baby inside, they had the option of shirking the responsibility. Interestingly enough, though, even if society didn’t demand that men take that responsibility, most men would feel it somewhere inside. Still, before the baby comes along, unless he’s in love, all a man wants to do is get laid.

Enjoy your Saturday nights while you can. You’re taking part in an ancient mating ritual. The girls exchange their girls sweatshirts for their sexiest outfits and the guys wear the coolest clothes they can find in their closets. You dance and flirt and get drunk and if you’re lucky, you get what you were looking for.

You will get away with it for awhile, so enjoy it while it lasts. One day, though, you will find yourself changing diapers on a Saturday night and feeling happy for the privilege. That seems to just be the way nature works, so don’t fight it.
