If it's to write an essay, then write an essay. If it's to list qualities, then do that. There may be a second assignment or something that you will be doing in class that will build on the list. Use terminology like introverted, extraverted, thinking, etc. from jungian personality types. If it's an essay, then if you have a personal ethic, a mantra that keeps you focused, or a goal, then you can write about that and describe the traits that you possess that have led you to that ethic or goal or that gave you the reason to keep a mantra in mind. Sometimes hardship causes great personal growth too. If you achieved something difficult, like a black belt, then aspects of your personality had something to do wtih it. It depends on your assignment. If it’s to write an essay, then write an essay. If it’s to list qualities, then do that.
