What is my “type”? Obviously, he is smart, funny, and cute. But who doesn’t have this type?

For those that are looking for a serious mate, then you should decide what it is that will make you happy long term. Here are some ways to get you there.

Personality tests. Insight into what makes you tick can be found in any one of dozens of personality tests available. An online search will turn up tests like Myers-Briggs that are geared toward career options, but will certainly help you analyze yourself and what you need to be happy in a relationship too.

Your ex’s pros and cons. Making a list of the pros and cons of your previous relationships isn’t a self-destructive exercise. Don’t relive your traumatic experiences, but do learn from them. Make a list of the qualities of those relationships and people that you liked and disliked most.

Mimic your fantasy celebrity love affair. This one is just for fun. AOL Personals has categorized some online profiles by similarities to celebs like Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey, and Katie Holmes.

Values. Only accept a date with someone who shares your values. This is the key to a long-lasting relationship. Identify your fundamental beliefs and priorities so that you don’t end up with a partner that may expect you to compromise those things later. Whether it’s a career, faith, geographic location, or children, decide what is most important to you.

Online shopping. Dating sites like Match.com, EliteMate.com, or Singlesnet.com are good for browsing. Maybe you’ll even decide you want to join the site. Either way it’s a good way to look at someone’s qualities that you may not have thought about before.

These suggestions will hopefully guide you in the right direction, but keep an open mind on your type and who you date. You never know who might surprise you and turn out to be your type after all.
