I met a guy whose pictures were of him, but they were when he was thinner and toned. When I met him he was quite heavier. I felt sorry for him that he’d gained weight, but I was also pissed that I wasted my time and the he had deceived me.

That website does have some fake profiles and “ad-bots” that spam you into visiting for-pay porn sites and such.

However, if you enter their chat rooms and have a decent, substantial conversation with someone, then at the very least you can tell it’s not an ad-bot. Yes, some guys will put a pic on their profile that makes them look better than they are (like an old photo of when they were younger or thinner). That’s why when you meet someone for the first time, it should be at a public spot like a coffee shop or cafe.

The man I’m currently dating and I met each other on gay.com —so it is a useful website, no doubt.
